Wills and Bequests
Leave your legacy with a gift in your Will today and help protect parrots now and for the future.
How It Works
Making a planned gift such as this is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for the WPT’s mission of protecting parrots and nature while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning, and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as importantly, you will know that you have made a meaningful contribution to WPT.
What are the Benefits?
Bequests and other planned gifts play a crucial role in WPT's continued ability to save endangered species by supporting innovative and effective conservation programs.

Legal Designation
Estate planning can be a complex process, so it is vital that your legal counsel or notary arranges your estate and completes your Will in a manner that best carries out your plans and wishes. As well, the World Parrot Trust cannot act as executor of a donor's estate.
Any changes or alterations should be addressed with an attorney, as estate laws will vary by region. For gifts that will take effect after your lifetime, the World Parrot Trust should be named as:
Federal EIN#62-1561595
United States
The World Parrot Trust USA Inc., a non-profit corporation with principal business address at:
Travelers Rest, SC 29690
United States
Use of Gifts
Leaving your bequest unrestricted has the benefit of allowing the Trust to direct funds where they are most needed. However, if you wish to allocate your gift towards the conservation efforts for a particular parrot species or to a specific project please add the following phrase to the wording recommended above:
"To be used to further the purposes of the World Parrot Trust in the conservation efforts for:____".
In addition, the following is suggested wording from our UK office which has been used in the estate planning of supporters there.
"I give and bequeath unto the Trustees of the World Parrot Trust [fill in the address] the sum of $_____ [or a _____ share in the residue of my estate] for the general purposes of the World Parrot Trust and declare that the receipt of the Administrator or other proper officer of the World Parrot Trust shall be sufficient discharge to my trustees."
If you complete your Will and include the World Parrot Trust in your wishes please share this with us, so we can acknowledge your invaluable support. It will aid us in our planning efforts and ensure that your funds are utilized according to your wishes. We also feel strongly about expressing our gratitude to those supporters who have remembered the Trust in such a generous way.
A bequest is a simple way to help save parrots. If you'd like to help the World Parrot Trust, but feel you cannot make a significant gift today, you may consider a charitable bequest.
Why Donors choose a Bequest
Bequests increase your giving options
A bequest can deliver a specific gift to The World Parrot Trust. For example, ("I bequeath the sum of Ten Thousand [$/£10,000] Dollars/Pounds"). Alternately, it can deliver a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate after taxes, expenses and specific bequests have been paid — what's known as the residue ("I bequeath Ten [10%] Percent of the residue of my estate").
A specific program or species can benefit from your bequest, or the gift can be unrestricted to allow the Trust to use it for top conservation priorities.
The difference between a Will and a Trust
A bequest from a will or a trust to the World Parrot Trust is fully deductible where applicable by charity law, and there is no limit on the deduction your estate can claim.
Bequests are deductible
A Will is a revocable, private document that takes effect after your death - it instructs survivors how to distribute your property afterward.
A revocable Trust is an entity that holds assets during your lifetime, then transfers ownership of them — or benefit from them — upon your death.
Wills and Trusts are the same in how they make charitable transfers. The probate and distribution process is simpler with a revocable Trust in some areas. Please consult your advisors to find out what is best for you.

Points for Planning
The more narrowly you restrict the use of your bequest, the greater the risk that the program you want to benefit today won't be as vital or as relevant when we receive your gift in the future. Please talk with us if you are drafting your will and wish to specify a particular project. Similarly, if you intend to bequeath real estate, a business interest, or other specialized property to the World Parrot Trust please let us know in advance.
What if I've already written my will or trust?
A Will or Trust can be amended to make a gift without rewriting the entire document. Your advisor can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest to us while reaffirming the other terms of your Will. Similarly, an attorney/advisor can prepare an amendment to a revocable Trust to add the World Parrot Trust as a beneficiary.
Please, remember to tell us!

Including the WPT in your estate plan is a simple way to make a gift to parrot conservation. There are several types of bequests:
Specific Bequest:
A specific individual or organization is left an exact amount or a particular item (such as an antique or collector's item) from a designated source.
Example: Georgina states in her will: "I leave my necklace to my daughter, Alice. I also leave my securities to the World Parrot Trust."
General Bequest:
Your executor has the flexibility to honor the gift from any available source with this type of bequest.

Residuary Bequest:
Once all other bequests, debts, expenses and taxes have been paid this type of bequest is honored.
Example: Georgina states in her will: "I give all the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate to the World Parrot Trust."
Contingent Bequest:
This type of bequest is fulfilled if certain conditions are met. For instance, if your primary beneficiary does not survive you, you can indicate your next choice through a contingent designation.
