Program: Mitchell’s Lorikeet Recovery
About
Mitchell's Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forsteni mitchellii), a subspecies of the Scarlet-breasted Lorikeet, is found on the islands of Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. It is currently facing a severe population decline due to the wild bird trade and is estimated to number fewer than fifty individuals. A glimmer of hope emerged in 2019 when WPT-Indonesia staff and local colleagues discovered a small group of six individuals on Bali, where it was thought to have vanished. On Lombok, the population likely consists of only a few dozen individuals.
The illegal capture and trade of wild birds remains a primary concern - challenging economic conditions on the islands contribute to the threat faced by parrot populations.
Actions and History
Since 2008, the World Parrot Trust (WPT) has worked to save Mitchell’s Lorikeet from extinction, more recently establishing the Parrot Conservation Foundation (Yasyan Konservasi Paruh Bengkok) in Indonesia to lead local conservation efforts. Since 2019, WPT has expanded its efforts to include a breeding‑for‑release program in partnership with Taman Safari Bali and Bali Bird Park.Â
The WPT and its partners are:
- Supporting reintroduction
In 2025, the WPT, in coordination with Paradise Park UK, facilitated the transfer of 40 birds to Indonesia to support local breeding and release programs. - Providing natural environments for captive breeding birds
Maintaining spacious enclosures in Bali designed to promote foraging, nesting, and social interaction, in addition to giving regular health checks, balanced diets and veterinary care. - Installing nest boxes in release areas
Setting up predator‑proof and camera‑monitored nest boxes in release areas to replace lost mature trees, increase breeding opportunities, and reduce nest site competition. - Monitoring birds once released
Tracking birds via transect surveys, roost counts, feeding site observations, and behavioural studies to assess survival, adaptation, habitat use, and breeding success. - Leading conservation outreach                                    Directing education and community engagement campaigns to reduce trapping and promote local stewardship.
The Mitchell’s Lorikeet remains highly endangered, but with in-country efforts, it can recover.
Make a difference in the lives of parrots.
