Actions and History

Since 2001, the World Parrot Trust has made lasting, diverse contributions to conserving the Grey Parrot, including:

  • Aiding wildlife law enforcement
Supported the enforcement of wildlife protection laws and the confiscation of illegally trapped parrots across West and Central Africa.
  • Rescuing and releasing Grey Parrots
Facilitated the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of hundreds of Grey Parrots caught in the wildlife trade.
  • Conducting vital field research
Led and funded research into population status, ecology, nesting behaviour, and threats facing Grey Parrots.
  • Advocating for international protections
Successfully campaigned for the species’ transfer to CITES Appendix I to halt international trade.
  • Building care and release facilities
Established and supported centres for the care, quarantine, and eventual release of confiscated birds.
  • Training local conservation partners
Equipped local teams with skills in veterinary care, wildlife rescue, nest monitoring, and law enforcement.
  • Protecting critical habitats
Collaborated with communities to safeguard habitats, including important nesting trees.
  • Raising public awareness
Engaged in education and awareness efforts to reduce demand and foster local stewardship.
  • Establishing long-term conservation programs
Created monitoring systems and partnerships with local conservation groups to ensure sustainable protection.

The Grey Parrot’s future depends on partnerships with dedicated in-country individuals who are working to save this iconic species.

Make a difference in the lives of parrots.
