About
The Grey Parrot's (Psittacus erithacus) range extends from Ghana and southern Nigeria to southern Cameroon and most of Equatorial Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its population numbers as few as 560,000.
Actions and History
Since 2001, the World Parrot Trust has made lasting, diverse contributions to conserving the Grey Parrot, including:
- Aiding wildlife law enforcement
Supported the enforcement of wildlife protection laws and the confiscation of illegally trapped parrots across West and Central Africa. - Rescuing and releasing Grey Parrots
Facilitated the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of hundreds of Grey Parrots caught in the wildlife trade. - Conducting vital field research
Led and funded research into population status, ecology, nesting behaviour, and threats facing Grey Parrots. - Advocating for international protections
Successfully campaigned for the species’ transfer to CITES Appendix I to halt international trade. - Building care and release facilities
Established and supported centres for the care, quarantine, and eventual release of confiscated birds. - Training local conservation partners
Equipped local teams with skills in veterinary care, wildlife rescue, nest monitoring, and law enforcement. - Protecting critical habitats
Collaborated with communities to safeguard habitats, including important nesting trees. - Raising public awareness
Engaged in education and awareness efforts to reduce demand and foster local stewardship. - Establishing long-term conservation programs
Created monitoring systems and partnerships with local conservation groups to ensure sustainable protection.
